Reading and Writing: I've had a brain that goes in circles since I was six years old & became obsessed with the one Unforgivable Sin, as defined by the particular Christian sect to which my parents belonged: rejection of, or cursing, the Holy Ghost. I had no idea, of course, just who or what the Holy Ghost might be; but I knew that I could assure myself a place in hell just by uttering the magic phrase, "Goddamn the Holy Ghost." Now he is a poet and teacher serving same. Hard to tell about God the Father and God the Son, but so much literature suggests the Holy Ghost is no friend of solemnity; proficient in the Sublime, the Holy Spirit is no less a fan of Peri Bathos, the excrement in Swift, the Doxies and Thieves in John Gay, and the curses, gorging, and satin-lined codpieces in Rabelais. Could it be the Holy Spirit herself, impatient with the meek, God-fearing Christians, speaking through the 6 year old proto-poet in execration?
