When Dick and I were at Oxford, the philosophers taught him that poetry is nonsense. (I accompanied him to Balliol to learn the English Method of spanking.) Then, at Yale Derrida taught him that philosophy is nonsense. Thus, from Dick's education in the finest schools, I Iearned that the highest form of art and philosophy is Pseuodoxia, the Learned Discourse of the Fool. All of A.J. Ayer and Derrida illustrate this method, but they remained unaware of the animating principal of their own practice, and so failed to perfect it. I don't see much improvement, either, among their students. Very sober, earnest, and playful only in the most elephantine way. The philosopher should go out into the street as naked as Diogenes, accost passersby, and teach philosophy as if he were a madman, for only a Fool or Madman would attempt the impossible -- finding truth or an honest man. (That, Trevor, is how you perform philosophy.)
