As writers say, "I could have made it shorter if I had more time." Assume that God feels that way about the Ten Commandments, particularly about, say, coveting, since it is essential to the Market through which God enters History. But pick a Commandment, any Commandment, that appeals to you and makes good sense, given your sinful Lifestyle.
How would you increase the percentage of times that you observe that Commandment and reduce the percentage of times that you violate it? Do we fail for lack of knowing what the Commandment means? Or it is weakness of will?
Contemporary Theory tells us that Truth, particularly moral truth, is hard to find. No, it is hard to live by, and the evasions of Theory are among the best proofs of moral frailty. You find truth at the foot of the Cross, or in other uncomfortable places. The demands it makes are not intellectual. We fail not for lack of brains, but courage. We keep one another more honest through satire, sermons, and moral example. Spanking works too.
