What does composition, or rhetoric, teach? Should it not teach how to write a good corporate memo? A speech for an immediate superior? How to reduce a complex argument to 15 Powerpoint slides? How to do a cost/benefit analysis? How to write a jingle? How to do talking points for a pundit, or deliver same? How to deflect questions in a Presidential press conference? How to ruin another's reputation with an attack ad? How to whip up a mob? How to talk hate on the radio? How to say nothing eloquently under pressure? How to deal with the media? Why Collin, Vita, Clancy, do composition teachers see themselves as some kind of resistance movement when in fact they are an outsourced corporate training division? (Answer: Because they are paid so little and seethe with resentment.) Is this not, in Marxist terms, alienation and bad faith? I find working in Wealth Bondage quite refreshing by contrast. At least and at last I am being honest about what I do - shining Candidia's boots. And it pays twice what I go teaching English Comp at Baylor. Congrats to Krista on studying for her LSATs. What better use of rhetoric than law? May she represent her client's well.
