Speaking of the unlicensed practice of the liberal arts, here are the official WB Charitable Cheerleader pom poms in genuine moose leather. As Pindar wrote, "Praise what deserves praise, and sow blame for wrong-doers." Whether the client is cheered for generosity or disciplined for selfishness, the point is to encourage virtue among the rich and powerful, leaving them writhing in esctacy, a living example for their compatriots. Virtue is not knowledge, but a habit, best inculcated by repition, drill, reward and punishment, as moralists have taught since Aristotle and his Ethics. All parents know this. We forget the need for discipline at our own cost when we go to the rich, who, no less than children, can be spoiled. We owe them what we owe our children, ordered liberty. Had Chuck Colsen been spanked soundly after Watergate, in some public venue, what a difference it might have made in discouraging the excesses of those who came after, down to very present. We cannot bring back the pillory, or the wheel, but surely we can live up to our duty and castigate our betters when they fall into sin, whether it be pride, covetousness, or mendacity. Else vice will thrive, like weeds in an unkempt garden.
