Waiting for Godot? Have not see him, but here is H. Peter Karoff on The World We Want. Please! Recognize that Peter is coming from a whole other world of considerations. He has spent decades now working with some of the world's leading philanthropists, both personal funders and foundations. His core concerns are about the fate of philanthropy in our dark time. Peter grew up without money. He has been an entrepreneur, an insurance salesman, an organizer in the 1960's, and a civic leader. He is top dog in philanthropic consulting having essentially invented the field. He is also a poet. His concerns are diverse and board level. He is not a techy. He is not yet web literate, much less a web maven. He knows the sociology of giving. He knows public policy. And he loves democracy, from the street on up. OK? So read his material thoughtfully. Here for me is the most important point. Peter lives in a dense network of wealthy, powerful, connected and basically caring people. They know from nothing about Dumpsters. But the answers to many of the questions Peter raises in his essay are to be found in and around the Dumpsters or not at all. By opening a conversation with Peter we are connecting two worlds, two networks. That has been my personal hope and dream since I first started blogging at a foolish site called MyGiftCoach that eventually turned into Wealth Bondage. So, ok, he is not Godot. But he is a special man who has gone out of his way to show up in the vicinity of the Dumpster risking his own good name among the high and the mighty. Don't be polite, but don't (as Bush would say) "misunderestimate" the opportunity.
