I agree that the implicit should be roused only when truly necessary. Every making explicit is a diminishment. That's why I carefully added the words "when appropriate," although I also carefully avoided saying when that would be, since I didn't think that would be, well, appropriate.

Wolf only occasionally has to remind us explicitly what his norms are, and sometimes - as when being cowed by Cheney after asking about Cheney's daughter - he doesn't quite know what they are himself.
