Long Sunday cites a 2003 "crisis" of critical theory, which included five urgent questions. Here is one:
3. It has been suggested that the major challenge for the humanities in the coming century will be to determine the fate of literature and to secure some space for the aesthetic in the face of the overwhelming forces of mass culture and commercial entertainment. True?
The "space for the aesthetic" is a Dumpster. Welcome, Theorists! We do have a Temp job available under me, proofing Candidia's Powerpoint presentations on The Triumph of Wealth. Pays $7.10 an hour, better than you make now teaching Theory as an Adjunct. True? Well, buck up! Poverty is a sign of intellectual integrity. There's a theory for you.

Beware! Sanitation workers are going round emptying Dumpsters. That is the word on the street. Interned with the Illegals, Dumpster Dwellers await processing in the Wealth Bondage Service Camps. "You will be placed in a good job like they did me," says the fat lady, implanting the monitoring chip. On the audio system they are playing easy listening hits from the '60s. I'm rolling down the road just to lighten my load.... Does anyone else feel a little claustrophobic in here?

Digby defends anonymity and pseudonymity, as do robbers who wear masks. It is his stock and trade. But we own our words and his will be visited upon him. I know where you live, Digby. Only one man and his posse are above the law in this country. And you are not of our company. You can have your mask back when we hang you, or a hood.

Fruit giant Chiquita agreed in March to pay $25 million to settle with the U.S. Department of Justice after acknowledging that its Colombian subsidiary, Banadex, secretly funneled $1.7 million to the death squads operating in zones where it had banana plantations.
The company had no qualms it declaring that it will now pay a fine of $25 million, payable in five annual installments. Actually, it’s even possible that Chiquita suggested its own fine, as "the company recorded a reserve in 2006 for the full amount of the fine in anticipation of reaching an agreement." This possibility is expanded by the fact that Chiquita carried out the payments for a time with the full knowledge of the Justice Department to which it will now pay its fine. "According to U.S. court documents, Chiquita told the Justice Department in April 2003 that it was funding the paramilitaries, and then kept paying them for another 10 months with the department's knowledge."
At least in America things are different. Here no one, with one exception, and those who work for him, are above the law. Tyranny, secrecy, and ruthlessness are the best defense against Terror.

Rush Limbaugh on Obama the Magic Negro. A black man acting white won't get my vote, nor Al Sharpton neither. Let's keep the White in the White House.

Wall St Journal runs a defense of tyranny by a Harvard Professor. And the daily news chatters on as if democracy were a trifle, a fashion that passed, leaving only the buzzword, the Freedom Brand we call Wealth Bondage.
